VPA students from the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University had the opportunity to immerse themselves in unique global experiences during their semester abroad in Florence. The program included a session with internationally acclaimed artist Carrie Mae Weems and attendance at the prestigious Biennale of Contemporary Arte 2024 in Venice.

During their time in Florence, the students were privileged to attend a public lecture by Artist in Residence Carrie Mae Weems at the University's Villa Rossa facility. Weems, who was in Italy for the "Black Portraitures" conference, engaged the students in a session focusing on "Black Realities Through Digital Media." Additionally, Jonathan Nelson, a faculty member specializing in Italian painting and sculpture, participated in the conference's "Radical Curricula" panel.

Weems also took the time to interact with the students in their studio and provide individual critiques of their artwork, offering them valuable insights and feedback. A total of eight VPA students, representing various art disciplines, had the opportunity to travel to Venice to explore the diverse artistic expressions showcased at the Biennale 2024.

Miranda Traudt, assistant provost for arts and community programming, expressed the significance of the students' exposure to such renowned artists and thought leaders, stating, "Students' exposure to world-renowned artists, emerging creatives and global thought leaders provided them with experiential learning that brought enjoyment in the moment and lasting experiences that are likely to impact them for their lifetimes."

Accompanying the students were Marcelle Haddix, associate provost for strategic initiatives, and a group of Syracuse University students who also participated in the critique with Weems. The entire experience offered the VPA students a valuable opportunity to expand their artistic horizons and gain insights into the global art scene.
