Three students at Syracuse University are breaking barriers in male-dominated fields by pursuing degrees in engineering and computer science. According to the American Association of University Women, women have been outnumbered in STEM fields, with only 21% of engineering majors and 19% of computer and information science majors being women.
The three students, Juanitta “AJ” Bekoe, Sandy Lin, and Ellie Parkes, are determined to level the playing field in these industries. They recently shared their experiences with SU News, discussing how their time at the College of Engineering and Computer Science has prepared them for successful careers and their plans for the future.
Juanitta “AJ” Bekoe, who is studying aerospace engineering, Sandy Lin, a computer science major, and Ellie Parkes, pursuing electrical engineering, are all passionate about increasing female representation in STEM fields. They are part of a new generation of students who are ready to make their mark in historically male-dominated industries.
As progress continues to be made towards inclusivity in STEM, these three students are shining examples of the talent and determination that women bring to these fields. With the support of their university and their own dedication, they are poised to make a significant impact once they graduate.
